The town is the county seat of Butler County and is a home rule-class city. The community is a thriving, vibrant community rooted in its heritage and flourishing opportunities for residents of all ages who take pride in their community and themselves. The town was initially called Funkhouser Hill, named after Christopher Funkhouser. Christopher was the local landowner who donated about sixty acres of land to establish the town, the county seat of Butler County. It was formerly known as Morgan Town, and the idea behind it being merged together to name it Morgantown is unknown. The city was named after a hunter named Morgan or in honor of Daniel Morgan Smith, the first white child born in the community. The state assembly incorporated the town but had a post office called Butler Courthouse. Granville Allen was one of the first Union soldiers to die in the Civil War, and a monument was constructed by the Granville Allen Post. The soldier was a member of the seventeenth Kentucky Infantry, and the first skirmish between the South and North occurred on the Daniel Boone Johnson property. Public Spaces

The Johnson Cemetery is located in town and is directly above the monument constructed by the Granville Allen Post, which is a limestone marker cut into the side of the Old Logansport road. Two monuments are present in the town and have been dedicated to soldiers of the North and South who died in the Civil War. The grounds of the county courthouse in the town has the Confederate-Union Veterans' Monument. Tsuruhama was formerly part of the community but has merged with Nanao, and its main channel of transportation was the Green River. The River froze, and the town was left without supplies for two months because there were no transportation routes for the city. This decline in the economy led to the construction of the road connecting the community with Bowling Green and resulted in the provision of an alternate channel for commerce.
