The town is located in Poweshiek County and has more than ten thousand residents. The Grinnell College and National Bank are located in the city and it was founded by settlers from New England who were descendants of English Puritans. The descendants are namely Dr. Thomas Holyoke, Henry Hamilton, Homer Hamlin, and Josiah B. Grinnell. Grinnell was named after J.B. Grinnell. Its initial name was "Stella," describing it as concise and rare. The city is located at the junction of two railway lines, namely Rock Island Railroad and St. Louis Railway, and is the largest town in Poweshiek County. The New York Times had universities and colleges of "rising or established scholarship," and the college was included. Grinnell College has its athletic team and won against the University of Iowa in the first football game in Mississippi. The city has a large employing industry called Spaulding Manufacturing Company, and the owner began making spring wagons and carriages in the town.
