The city is located in Marion Township in Lawrence County and has more than five thousand residents. It is a town in Indiana and was constructed as a railroad city, and Ormsby McKnight Mitchel was the owner of the land of present-day Mitchell and a West Point graduate and professor at the University of Cincinnati. The town was named after this native of Kentucky, Ormsby Mitchel, an astronomer, and attorney. He later became a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War and was known for ordering the raid known as the Great Locomotive Chase. General Mitchel died of yellow fever while serving in Beaufort in South Carolina and was known as "Old Stars". The town hosted many manufacturers, including the truck, wagon, and bus body enterprises of Ralph H. Carpenter known as the Carpenter Body Company. Sam Bass was born in the community and orphaned at thirteen years of age. He engaged in lawful activities until he became an important person of the "wildness" of the American Old West as he robbed stagecoaches, banks, and railroad trains. Bass was wounded by Texas Rangers and was remembered as part of a robbery of gold, the largest robbery in the history of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Spring Mill State Park is located in the eastern part of the community and includes a memorial to astronaut Gus Grissom as well as a pioneer village and several caves. The city's downtown area was on the National Register of Historic Places.  The town established an industrial park and Urban Enterprise Zone. The Mitchell Opera House and Mitchell Downtown Historic District are on the National Register of Historic Places. 

The library serving the city is the Community Public Library, a lending library. Mitchell High School which serves the city's residents is located in the city.
