The city is located in Tipton and Madison Counties. Tipton County is one of the Kokomo Indiana megalopolis areas, while Madison County is one of the Anderson Indiana megalopolis areas. It was platted under the name Duck Creek, and a post office was constructed under the title; it was renamed Elwood and had been operating for a long time. The town became a sundown community, hindering African Americans from living in the town. The city was the site of a great political event, a formal notification ceremony for Elwood-born Wendell Willkie to run as president of the United States against Franklin Roosevelt. People stormed into the town, and they came in sixty-three special trains, sixty thousand automobiles, one thousand and two hundred buses, and three hundred Pullmans.

Events in the City

The annual Glass Festival is one of the festivals held in the community in which the city tries to promote its history with glass and natural gas. Welsh immigrant families moved into the area and the neighboring towns of Gas City and Anderson. The Elwood Downtown Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places; Red Gold has a plant in the city. Other small manufacturers, including tool shops, also have their plants in the city. The city has a public library, a branch of the North Madison County Public Library System.
