The city is located in Franklin and Ripley counties in Indiana, and it is the largest community in both counties. Henry Boehringer, who was a German immigrant, was the first major builder in the town.

A three-story building that was constructed on East Pearl Street though it was called Broadway Street in the town's early years, the building was regarded as Boehringer Halls because of the presence of a dance floor on the third story while a Catholic congregation used the basement as their church. Louis Walter established the town's first gristmill in 1857. Also, new rows of buildings were constructed on the northern side of the city close to Boehringer street; the buildings consisted of rows of apartments. Boehringer also owned the land where Ward School now stands. John Brinkman, in 1865, built a restaurant and hotel called the Sherman House, which was named after a major general that was in charge of the Union Army in the person of William Tecumseh Sherman. He led a victory that was known as Sherman's March to the Sea.
