It is a village located in Cook County. It is a suburb of Chicago, and it has more than thirteen thousand residents. The city is an affluent suburb located alongside the Burlington, Chicago, and Quincy Railroad. It was named after the local mineral springs located southwest of the town. The city initially consisted of flat prairie land with a swamp on the border.

Elijah Wentworth was the first known settler in the area, and Joseph Vial, the farmer, moved from New York after the Black Hawk War and built a cabin along the road. This cabin served as a hotel, stagecoach station, post office, and general store for the entire city. A rail line was built through the village by the CB&Q Railroad, and it filled much of the swamp. Thomas Clarkson Hill, the two sons of Philip F. W Peck and William Page, bought the three tracts that make up the area. A public vote incorporated the area, and the townspeople elected T. C Hill as the town's first president.

The waterworks system includes the popular water tower built in the community. The tower was constructed very high and became a Museum on the National Register of Historic Places. Many improvements in the community include the electric plant, fire department, telephones, a library, and a park district.

The community is served by one public high school district and three public elementary school districts. The district is packed into one body called Western Springs School District, and it serves the initial neighborhoods of the city. The district includes Forest Hills, Field Park, McClure Junior High School, and Laidlaw Elementary Schools.
