The village was formally incorporated and its roots trace back to the period after the Civil War. The first residents in the city were members of the Riverside Holiness Association. Another set of the first residents consisted of the Onion farmers, and the city was home to the legendary Melody Mill ballroom of the Big Band era.

The community comprises active young families and senior citizens who enjoy the quality of life and many other of the community's benefits. They include a quilting club, senior clubs, a thriving theater group, a state-of-the-art ball field, scouting, and sports program, and a sophisticated lighting and tornado alert system. Public and Educational Facilities

The Village Commons is the hub of all administrative offices, village departments, and recreational events ranging from the western suburbs' most beautifully executed green spaces. The Commons features a walking path, pond and fountain, children's play area, picnic areas, and its most recent center, a gazebo dedicated to the courageous women and men of the American Armed Forces.

The Historical Society meets monthly to catalog and assemble the wide collection of items that paint a picture of the community as it has grown over the years. Interested residents are welcome to come and browse the collection and view the mementos. North Riverside is a wonderful village that the mayor is proud to show to visitors who come to visit, and it has a library that has been extremely helpful to the residents. The library has a space donated to display artifacts and collections, and a rotating sample of the collection is on display. The library shares memories and stories, newspaper clippings, and photos.
