It is a city located in McHenry County in Illinois; it has more than ten thousand residents. The community is sixty-three miles from the loop of Chicago; it is also the last stop on the Union Pacific and Northwest Line. Jacob Davis and Abram Carmack were the initial owners of the land, which became the community; they acquired it from the government in 1845 and sold it to Gilbert Brainard later. The land was bought by Amos Page, Elbridge Gerry Ayer, and Otis Eastman after Gilbert Brainard died. They planned the city's layout and named it "Harvard"; they did it in honor of Harvard, Massachusetts. Later, Otis Eastman and Amos Page sold their shares to Elbridge Gerry Ayer was involved in his business interest to extend the North-Western and Chicago Transportation Company railroad. This new town was situated directly on the extension route, and Ayer's request to build a station in the city was granted. Mr. Elbridge Gerry Ayer bought the hotel from Mr. H. C. Blackman, who designed more floors to three stories and added a veranda and wing; it was named Ayer Hotel. Wounded soldiers during the civil war that were passing through the city were lodged at the hotel without payment. The hotel was bought by Mr. S. J. Noble and renamed the Noble Hotel, and when Noble could not maintain mortgage payments; he then sold it to Mr. P. G. Allen who renamed the Hub Hotel.
