The city is located in Lee county, Illinois, USA. The area was named after John Dixon who founded the city. He was also a cable ferry operator who operated a ferry service to and from the Rock River in Dixon. As at 2010, the city had a population of almost 16,000 residents. Ronald Regan, the 40th President of the United States, also lived his early life in Dixon. President Regan was actually born in the city of Tampico but his family relocated to the city when he was nine years old. The Regan's family house is situated at 816 South Hennepin Avenue and is still well-preserved and has become a public monument in the city. In 1984 during his tenure, President Regan visited his boyhood city with his family and a parade was held in his honor by the city officials.

The city is regarded as a regional employment hub and is a major point for distribution, warehouse and food processing companies. For example, some major companies that have a base in the city include the popular logistic company I-39 Logistics Corridor and I-88 West. Other major employers of labor within the area are the government and healthcare organizations.

Many fun events are held in the city every year. One of them is the annual Petunia Festival which takes place every summer. The festival features a carnival, parade, fireworks show, country concert and a 5-kilometer race called the Reagan Run.
