Flowering Plants Sent to Ludowici, GA

The community is located in Long County and it is home to more than three thousand residents. It is one of the Hinesville-Fort Stewart megalopolis areas. The community was formerly called Johnston Station; it was formed when the Gulf Railroad and Atlantic Railroad became a stop called "Four and a Half." Johnston Station was built close to a landowner's house named Allen Johnston; it had a post, a telegraph, and express offices. H. F McKay was elected to the senate of Georgia to represent Liberty County; he later lived in Johnston Station. Ludowici was renamed in 1905. The National Register of Historic Places in Long County includes Ludowici Well Pavilion and The Long County Courthouse.

A German entrepreneur Carl Ludowici established the plants for the Ludowici Roofing Tile Co., in Johnson Station. The city built a new high school, and the family contributed to the provision of roofing tiles and construction costs. The plant occupied more than one thousand acres of land and provided employment opportunities for the residents. It manufactured tiles that can still be found throughout Georgia. Although several homes in the city and the surrounding communities used the plant, it later closed down in 1914. The Ludowici Roof Tile Company is still in existence, but the company's plant is sited in Ohio.
