Gourmet Baskets Sent to Hahira, GA
The city is located in Northwest Lowndes County. It has more than three thousand residents. The city was named after a local cotton plantation. The owner of the plantation named his estate after a Hairaairee, a West African Village. The name also has been derived from Hahiroth, a place mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the city.
It was known as the Queen Bee Capital of the World, so it received a library as a reward. A festival is always celebrated in honor of this. It is called the Honey Bee Festival. It is a yearly event that takes place during the first week of October. One of the largest festivals in south Georgia brings thousands of people together each year and features crafts, arts, a parade, and a beauty pageant.
Education in the Community
The Lowndes County School District serves the students in the city. The schools in the district include Hahira Middle School and Elementary School. The South Georgia Regional Library operates Walter R. & Dorothy Salter Library, and the public library contains a few thousand books in a small room in City Hall. Jackie Matthews operated the library and it opened only on Thursday afternoons. Georgia promised a bountiful grant program to its cities. It pumped funds into furnishings and construction of projects that matched the funds. The library's name was acquired from Walter R. Salter, a councilman, a former mayor, and a local business owner. He had a long-time desire for a library up till his death. His wife took up the project and presented thirty thousand dollars. She was present at the formal opening of the library. The library is widely used by home school families and educators for its outstanding programs. It has earned a reputation for hospitality and friendliness. It has become a true community center for the residents and a touchstone that one must visit. The Cauthen Construction Company later renovated it. The citizens of the community were divided due to the sewage and water issues they experienced. Some notable people in the history of Hahira include Althea Garrison, Stephen Drew, Jerry Manuel, Gabe Nabers, Dean Mathis, and Lizz Wright. Avas Flowers offers delivery to the school district and library in the city.
