Garden City is located in Chatham County and has more than eleven thousand residents. The city is located in the northwestern part of Savannah and hosts the busiest and largest ocean terminal of the Port of Savannah. A part of the city is residential, and another part is industrial. Most of the heavy industries in Chatham County are located in the community; the city has the flagship operation of the Georgia Ports Authority.

The community was formerly called the Industrial City Gardens, and the settlement was established to house the large workforce required by the new chemical plants and factories just west of downtown Savannah.

There are many major corporations that have a presence in the city. These include GAF Materials Corporation, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, National Gypsum and SemMaterials.

Development of the City

The area was home to three important plantations: Givens, Brampton, and Telfair, before its name was officially changed to Garden City. The town has significantly expanded southward and westward. It has acquired several residential subdivisions, which include Central Junction, Chatham Villa, Rossignol Hill, Sharon Park, The Oaks, Wheat Hill, and Woodlawn Terrace The city also provides non-team activities such as roller-skating, a summer day camp (Camp Eagle), a center for senior citizens, and after-school programs.

Garden City is home to five public parks which are all managed by the municipal City Recreation and Parks Department. The public parks include Bazemore Park, Griffin Park, The Park at Sharon Park, Town Green, and Volunteer Park. The Savannah Chatham County Public School System serves the city's residents, and the schools in the city include Garden City Elementary School, George A. Mercer Middle School, and Robert W. Groves High School Groves High School is also located in the city and is known as "the pride of the Westside".
