Pinecrest is a suburban village in Miami-Dade County.It is governed by a five-member Village Council.It is considered one of the most expensive places to live in the whole of the United States. The town has its own newspaper the bi-weekly Pinecrest Tribune. Recently it has gone through the aggressive construction of several new parks, development of area wide Wi-Fi and the planting of thousands of trees. Pinecrest Gardens is known as the "crown jewel" of its many parks. It is also known as South Florida's Cultural Arts Park. It has over 1000 varieties of exotic tropical plants and trees.
The area's settlement began in the 1900s by railroad tycoon Henry Flager. He used the area as a staging ground during the construction of the Overseas Railroad to the Florida Keys. In the 1930's growth continued with the opening of the first tourist attraction in the Miami area. This was the Parrot Jungle and Gardens. The 1950s and 1960s saw the development and construction of many ranch-style houses which laid the foundation of the community's rural and lushly landscaped areas.
The area suffered a major economic setback with the destruction caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. But the area has slowly and steadily rebuilt. The residents decided to incorporate it as a city in 1996.
