The town was named after Mr. Berklemann, who was from Germany. He lived in the town when it was being incorporated, and since the town was located between two lakes there were more than 28 mini lakes in the town. He deemed Interlachen, meaning between the lakes, as an appropriate name. It is currently the oldest Schoolhouse in use in Florida, and it is the current location for the Interlachen High School JROTC program. The town's electricity was established in 1926, and a major route, Route 14, which was renamed the State Road 20, was also constructed through the town. Railroads were also constructed through the town, and in the 1930s, they came to the town every two hours. A caboose in the middle of the town to remind people that it was once a tourist haven.
