The city is located in White County. It has more than eight thousand residents making it the second-highest populated community in the county. It was incorporated in 1975 and is home to Arkansas State University. This University also has branch campuses in Searcy, Heber Springs, and Little Rock Air Force Base. The city was named after a railroad executive, Roswell Beebe. He was responsible for bringing the rail line through the city, and the city started out at the intersection of Highway 31 and the railroad. Roswell Beebe was president of the Fulton and Cairo Railroad Company. This was the company responsible for building the railroad through White County. Jim Smith, a civil engineer, and the surveyor was also one of the early settlers. He settled at Stoney Point and moved to the area later. He owned several businesses in the community, including a bakery, a bank, a pool hall, a dentist's office, and a doctor's office. He, therefore, owned most of the city and became the richest man there. The city was incorporated when thirty-two citizens submitted petitions. It was then presented to Judge A.M Foster, the County Judge. The city had several businesses, including hotels, stores, boarding houses, blacksmith and wagon shops, meat markets, cotton gins, a combined gristmill and sawmill, livery stables, a fruit evaporator, and a photo gallery. The town also had the Bank of White County, a public school for white children, and separate churches for African Americans and White parishioners.

Electricity was introduced to the community in the early twentieth century. A gasoline generator powered it, and the electricity was provided to only some specific areas before it was turned off. Every year, the town always has a Strawberry Festival because the farms between Bald Knob and the city produce more strawberries than any county in the United States. Every person driving through the town was given a half-pint of strawberry ice cream during this festival. One significant thing in the history of the city that is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places is the Beebe Jail.

Arkansas State University is located in the community, and it was founded as the Junior Agricultural School of Central Arkansas. It is the largest employer in the city. It is a center for technical trade programs and long-distance learning in Central Arkansas. It offers Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, and Associate of Arts degrees. The schools in the city are under the jurisdiction of the Beebe School District include Beebe High School, Middle School, Junior High School, Elementary School, Early Childhood School, Badger Elementary, and Badger Academy.
