The city is located in Walworth County, and it has a population of more than 9,000 residents and is located 45 miles from Milwaukee; The city is home to Delavan Lake, which is a major tourist attraction in the area. The first P.T Barnum Circus was started in the area by Dan Costello and William C. More than 130 staff of the Delavans circus colony were laid to rest in St. Andrew and Spring Grove Cemeteries. The city was known for its association with the circus.

The city is home to Wisconsin Circus Centennial. May 1966 signaled the year the United States Post Office selected the town to cover its five-cent American Circus commemorative postage stamp. The Citizens Bank of Delavan was founded in 1875 by Thomas Perry James and associates.
