It was named by Dr. Joseph Spencer when he worked as his father's aide during the War, and his father was given a grant of five thousand acres of land for his services during the Revolutionary War. The city was known for the production of Vitrolite, and its first mayor was Charles R. Blair. The regional shopping mall in the community, which is close to the ten largest cities of Parkersburg is Grand Central Mall, and the mall includes a food court, and three anchor stores: JCPenney, Belk, and Dunham's Sports, and ninety tenants. It is owned by Washington Prime Group and is the only enclosed mall about thirty-five miles away from its region. JCPenney bought it, The Diamond, G.C Murphy, and the Diamond store later became Stone & Thomas, then Elder-Beerman, which finally became Phar-Mor, a discount pharmacy. The mall was bought by Glimcher Realty Trust when the company invested in an eight million dollar expansion that brought about the construction of a movie theater and a food court. The Phar- Mor Store became the Steve and Barry Store which Dunham's Sports later occupied.
