Delivery of Fresh Flowers to Poquoson, VA
It was informally referred to as Bull Island, an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has a population of more than 12,000 residents. The city is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The town was formerly part of York County and was incorporated as a town in 1952 as an independent city in 1975. Years after the area was registered as an independent entity, some services such as sheriff, courts, and jail are still shared with neighboring York County. It is the oldest continuously named city in Virginia and one of the very few cities that retain the name derived from the Native Americans who inhabited the area before the English colonized the area in the 17th century. The meaning of the city in Native America is great marsh. Inhabitants of the town used the term provision to describe a woody, low, marshy place covered by water during winter and dry during the summer. The Native Americans in the area were Algonquians, one of the tribes that were associated with the Powhatan Confederacy, and were very defensive to the early colonizers. The name Poquoson has lasted through centuries and has become a pronoun that is used to call the present city.
One of the first battles on land during the American Civil War was fought nearby; it was the Battle of Big Bethel in 1861. A Union General called George B McClellan came up with an ambitious plan called the Peninsula Campaign to put an end to the war by moving his troops from the Union stronghold of Fort Monroe and overthrowing the Confederate capital at Richmond. Unfortunately, a copy of his battle plans was obtained by a Confederate spy called Thomas Nelson Conrad, and the Confederate forces under the command of General B Magruder responded by creating three lines of defensive position that extended across the Peninsula to stop the Union forces' March. The confederate forces abandoned their position, and the Union Army moved to establish a supply depot in the area.
