Muleshoe was founded when the Northern Texas and Pecos Railway were established in Farwell, Texas. The railroad was from the city to Lubbock through the northern part of Bailey County. The community is the county seat of Bailey County and is home to the National Mule Memorial. The Heritage Center in the city is a popular museum that demonstrates the importance of ranching to West Texas. The complex has several special buildings originally from Bailey County that show the living conditions of the time. The city's National Wildlife Refuge is the oldest of its kind in Texas and a wintering area for migratory waterfowl. The refuge contains the largest number of sandhill cranes in North America.

The City's History

The city was named after the Muleshoe Ranch, and the pioneers built a large ranch house and a log schoolhouse and established a small cemetery for family members. The Ranch was given its name after the owner found a mule shoe in the soil. The Gulf, the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway Company, and Santa Fe and Northwestern Railway Company merged. The companies came together to charter and construct a railway between Farwell and Lubbock on the New Mexico border.

The city became the county seat after the county was organized and continued to grow quickly. The town had more than five thousand residents, about two hundred businesses, two banks, two hospitals, a newspaper, a library, and a radio station. The city has the world's largest mule shoe at the Muleshoe Heritage Center.

Muleshoe Independent School District serves the city's residents, and the schools in the district include Muleshoe High School, South Plains College, Watson Junior High School, Mary DeShazo Elementary School, and Neal B.
