The city is located in Jasper County, Texas, and has a population of more than 8,000 residents. It is close to the Deep East Texas region. The city has an annual festival called the Butterfly Festival, and it is meant to celebrate the annual migration of monarch butterflies. The community was initially part of Mexican Texas. The first settler was John Bevil. Almost thirty families were the first settlers in the area in 1830. The town was renamed after William Jasper in 1835. He was a soldier from the American Revolution. who died in an attempt to plant the American Flag while they were invading Savannah in 1779. The town was part of the initial counties in the Republic of Texas that was created in 1836. The county became part of the United States after the annexation of Texas in 1845.

The Early Economy

The town was home to a Confederate quartermaster depot during the Civil War. It also served as transportation, community, and supply for the Confederates. After the war, Union troops took over the town of Jasper and camped in the town square. The community and timbre industry started to grow. Two sawmills were constructed with a combined capacity of 125,000 board feet of timber. They also started to produce logs, poles, pulpwood, ties, and baskets with a monthly capacity of almost 200 railway cars every month. The year 2000 was an interesting year for the town as the town attained a population of above 8,000 and had more than two hundred businesses. The town was one of the initial locations for the recovery of the Space Shuttle code-named Columbia. The city was severely affected by Hurricane Rita in 2005. The city council controls the community and is composed of six members and a hired city manager. The town has a park called the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, and it is visited by thousands of vacationers yearly.

The city is under the jurisdiction of the Jasper Independent School district, and the Vista Academy is also in the town.
