The city is situated in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and is close to the Central Pennsylvania Susquehanna River, just downstream of the confluence. Shamokin settlement was renamed Sunbury in the year 1772 when Northumberland was subdivided and incorporated. Sunbury-on-Thames, a town in the Surrey megalopolis of Spelthorne, brought about the city's name. Thomas Edison fixed the first achievable three-wire electric structure, formerly known as the City Hotel, which was renamed Edison Hotel on the city's 150th anniversary. A regional supermarket, Weis Markets functioning in seven states, has its headquarters in the city, it is a significant entrepreneur in the region and city.
