The city was founded by a family who first settled on a plain situated on the banks of the Shenango River, which is now Sharon Hill's downtown business district. It was named after a bible reading settler who represented the city with the Plain of Sharon in Israel. The area was formerly a site of coal mining until its economy changed to steel and iron making and other heavy industries. The city's economy diversified due to the extensive national deindustrialization and is presently based on education, light industries, social services, and health care. Union Brewing Co, a large commercial beer brewery formerly located in the city until it was forced to close down like many other breweries. The National Register of Historic Places had the Frank H. Buhl Mansion on its list. Some other local attractions include Reyer's shoes, the Winner-off-price Fashion Store, and Daffin's Candy.

The Shenango campus of Pennsylvania State University is also located in the city and offers various two-year and four-year degrees. It hosts the Sharon Regional Health System School of Nursing and Laurel Technical Institute.
