Sending Flowers to Worthington, OH

Worthington is a northern suburb of Columbus and was founded by the Scioto Company. The city was led by James Kilbourne, who was later elected to the United States House of Representatives. The town was named after Thomas Worthington, who later became governor of Ohio. A group of prospective settlers established the Scioto Company at the home of Rev. Eber B. Clark in Granby. Nathaniel Little and James Kilbourne arrived at Colonel Thomas Worthington's settlement in Chillicothe, Ohio, and they reserved land along the Scioto River. These two pioneers established their new settlement on the Pickaway Plains. James Kilbourne settled in the area to inspect the Scioto Company's purchase, and a work party of seven hired laborers began work clearing the forest. The Scioto Company decided to name the village after Thomas Worthington, one of the first two senators in Ohio. Ezra Griswold was officially the first settler of the community.

Churches in the City

Worthington Academy and Episcopal Church were established to provide financial support, and Aurora Buttles House was established in the community, Philander Chase was to become the first rector of St. John's Episcopal Church and served as rector of Episcopal churches in Delaware and Columbus. Chase also became principal of the Worthington Academy and was elected Bishop of the new Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. Chase established Kenyon College in the city, and Aurora Buttles erected a Masonic hall.
