Vermillion is located in Erie and Lorain counties in the U.S state of Ohio. A part of Lorain county is a portion of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Erie County is a portion of the Sandusky area. The city extracted its name from its river, growing into a fishing and small-boat harbor. Commerce took place in nearby towns. Also, there are over twelve parks and facilities in the community, including the Vermillion River reservation having the Bacon Woods and Mill Hollow areas on each side of the river; the river goes through the reservation and out into Lake Erie. There are also picnic shelters and trails in the city.

The Vermillion School Structure provides education for the public ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade to professional career opportunities; the system also has the Vermillion Institute of Technology.
