Norwood today is the 2nd most populous city in Hamilton County and is completely surrounded by the city of Cincinnati. It was originally created as a suburb of the city that surrounds it and is known for its tree-lined streets and old homes. The area of Norwood has been settled since prehistoric times. Remnants of the Pre-Columbian Adena culture survived to today in the Norwood Mound, an earthwork structure that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Many objects of this culture were found by the early settlers and make up a large proportion of the original specimens at the Native American Art Collection of the Cincinnati museum.

In 1787 the United States Congress created the Northwest Territory. A large track of land that contained the future area of Norwood was purchased by New Jersey Congressmen John Cleves Sickes. One year later the first permanent settlement on the banks of the Ohio River was made. John Sharp built a county store in what would become Norwood though the area was originally named Sharpsburg. However the community was renamed Norwood soon after the coming of the Cincinnati Railroad came and the residents decided that the name Sharpsburg was not attractive enough. The town slowly but slowly but steady grew. Many new subdivisions were built. In 1898 major industry came to Norwood when the Bullock Electric Manufacturing Company relocated to Norwood. This company was eventually acquired by German giant Siemens which continues to operate today in the same building. In 1902 Cincinnati tried to annex Norwood and the motion was defeated by a small margin. To forestall further attempts Norwood was incorporated as its own city shortly thereafter. In the late 1980s the town went through some hard times with the closing of the General Motors Plant. But the city was ever resilient and was soon diverging their economy with the creation of a major entertainment and retail venue located on the site for the former GM plant. Other projects soon followed and the town was back on firm economic ground.
