During World War I the community changed its name to North Canton because of the anti-German sentiment that was prevalent at the time.

By 1933 the Hoover company was the largest producer of vacuum cleaners in the entire world. The plant was closed in 2007 and the old Hoover Building was renovated as apartments and a retail mall.
