Gift Baskets Sent to Burnsville, NC

The city is located in Yancey County, North Carolina, and it has a population of more than 2,000 residents. The town was founded in 1834, and it was named after 1812 naval hero of War of 1812  Captain Otway Burns. A statue of the Captain was donated to the town by his grandson Walter Francis Burns Sr. The statue has the inscription "He Guarded Well Our Seas, Let Our Mountains Honor Him". It was later replaced due to damage in the 2000s.

Burnsville was the only town incorporated in Yancey County. it held a referendum legalizing the sale of alcohol within the town limits in 2010. The referendum result led to the end of the prohibition of the sale of alcohol within the County. Retail establishments in the town were allowed to sell wine and beer. Restaurants with licenses were allowed to sell mixed drinks, beer, and wine.

The town has a lot of historical structures, such as Nu Wray Inn, which is the oldest building in the town. It was built in 1833 and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, Parkway Playhouse is the oldest operating theater company in the state. W.R. Taylor was the founder of the company in 1947. Other structures on the National Register of Historic Places list are John Wesley McElroy House, Bald Creek Historic District, Chase Coletta House, Yancey Collegiate Historic District, Citizens Bank, and Yancey County Courthouse.

Educational Facilities

The city is under the jurisdiction of the Yancey County Schools System, with the following schools under it, namely Mayland Community College, Mountain Heritage High School, East Yancey Middle School, and Burnsville Elementary School. The only operating textile factory in the County is Glen Raven. The city formerly has two textile mills, Glen Raven and Avondale Mills, some of the manufacturing businesses  Taylor Togs' Micaville blue jeans factory, and Avondale Mills facility closed in 2004. The community has some attractions, namely The Parkway Playhouse, Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River, and the John Wesley McElroy House, which was built in 1830 but is now a museum.
