The city is located in Madison County west of Oneida Castle and east of Wampsville, New York. The city has a population of more than 12,000 residents. The city was named after the Oneida tribe, which had a large territory around Oneida Lake during the colonial period. The area formed part of the Territory of the Oneida tribe during the colonial days. They are part of the Five Nations that makes up the Iroquois League. A lot of the tribes were allies of the Americans. At the same time, the Revolutionary War was being fought through the Cayuga, Seneca, Onondaga, and the Mohawk tribes were led by the Chief of the Mohawk Joseph Brant who fought for the British. 

Returning to their city after the Revolution, the men of the U.S government gave the Oneida who fought and supported the American effort compensation for the losses they incurred and were given the Mohegan Nation. The federal government recognized the Oneida Nation has owners of land in the vicinity of where some of its members reside. They operate the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona.  The area became incorporated in the early part of 1848 as a part of a bigger city of Lenox because of non-stop friction among the different sections of the city. This led to differences that could not be resolved, and the city went ahead to set itself as the city of Oneida in 1896 and was later chartered as a city in 1901. Due to the history of the city, its center has a compact design and is pedestrian-friendly.
