It is a hamlet located in the Town of Bethlehem in Albany County. It is a suburb of the city of Albany. It was designated a census-designated place by the U.S Census Bureau in 1980. The community has a population of more than 9,000. The hamlet has also been named one of the Best Places to Live in America by CNN/Money Magazine. It was rated 22nd on the list of Great American Towns.

Nathaniel Adams was the first postmaster in the area. He moved to this place in 1836. He built the first post office in 1840 at his hotel, the Adams Hotel, which served as the community hall from 1950-to 1980. He also donated an acre of land to the community to develop a chapel so that the town's residents did not have to travel to Unionville to worship.

After Adamsville got its post office and there was initial confusion between it and others of similar names, they changed the name of the post office to Delmar. Three locations in the community were listed on the National Register of Historic Places, namely: Patterson Farmhouse, Vanderheyden House, and the United States Post Office. The following are notable people of the town Edward Burton Hughes (1905-1987), The acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, and Eva Marie Saint, a film actress, who were mainly raised in the community.

The town has a very big park called Elm Avenue Park, it is located south of the Delmar bypass, and it consists of tennis, basketball courts, fitness trail, volleyball courts, playing fields, a dog park, playground, and pavilions. The four tennis courts and basketball court are lit at night from May till October; various winter facilities are sledding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and a skating rink.
