The city of Dardenne Prairie is located in St. Charles County, Missouri. It is a relatively large city, and it grew from the area close to St. Peter's and expanded to the northern side of Dardenne Creek. The town got its name after the creek, and in some of the early documents, its name appeared in different formats such as Darden creek, Dardenne creek, Dardenne river or Dardenne river. The name originated from the Dardenne family, who were some of the early pioneers of the Mississippi valley. Toussaint Dardenne originated from Montreal, Canada, and married Marie Francoise Lever at St Anne de Fort Chartres. One of the original Dardennes must have camped in the area and carried out hunting, which could have led to the area adopting the name. A traveler William Clark kept a detailed journal of the trip to the western part of the area to establish the Fort Osage in 1808.
