It has a population of more than fifteen thousand residents. It is in the northeastern part of Metro Detroit and shares its western and southern border with Detroit. The city was incorporated in 1951 from the last remaining portion of Gratiot Township. A charter commission was prepared for the town and later adopted. The development of the city was a reflection of the growth of Detroit. The Interstate 94 road was approved, and construction of the Eastland Shopping Center also commenced, which was one of the first outdoor malls in 1957. The city has continued to grow and develop over the years, and in 2001, it celebrated its 50th anniversary. For a long time, The city was home to the East Side Drive-In, one of the first drive-in theaters Midwest and the first in Metro Detroit, and it had an automobile capacity of 970 vehicles. The company was closed in 1977, and the structure was demolished a year later. The Hideout is a venue for local bands and a famous teen dance club and it hosts various music acts. The Hideout produced a local record label called Hideout Records. A similar venue for local bands in the community is Notre Dame High School, where residents express their talents and play live.
The city provides public school districts, including the Grosse Pointe School District, and the Harper Woods School District. It also serves Harper Woods High School, Triumph Middle School, and Beacon Elementary School. The Starr Academy and Chandler Park Academy Elementary are also housed in Pembroke City.
Some private schools also serve the community, including St. Peter's Grade School and Trinity Catholic High School. Wayne State University is also situated in the city; it serves as a substitute when the public high school is not in session.
