The city is located next to Aurora in Kendall County in Illinois; it has more than eleven thousand residents. It is one of the Chicago megalopolis areas. In the nineteenth century, the city was home to the Plano Harvester Company and the Plano Molding Company. The companies provided the foundation for the city's development. The mascot of the Plano High School was the Reaper as a result of this development.

The city was once the headquarters for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The area was centered around agriculture and in the beginning, its only settlers were the owners of the grist mills. Development was supported by the city's location along US Route 34 and the Illinois Zephyr Amtrak passenger rail service. The Plano Molding Company produced plastic domestic containment units and fishing tackle equipment and has its headquarters in the city. Both of the initial factories are still in the city, but most of the production is now in nearby cities, Mendoza and Sandwich. Sandwich and Plano have a sibling-like relationship. They are agricultural cities located along a rail artery and a major trading route.

The Man of Steel

Several new housing developments have been constructed in the city. Unfortunately, due to the city's economic challenges, many of the houses in the further development have experienced foreclosures. Finally, though, Waubonsee Community College built a satellite campus in the community. The city was used to film Man of Steel; several farms around the town were used, with one used for the Kent family farm. The city's downtown was restructured and used as a set for Smallville's downtown. The city declared itself Smallville during the filming, and a "Smallville Superfest" was established.  The district comprises two elementary schools, Plano High School, and two middle schools. The Stone Church is another site to behold; it was constructed in 1868, and it was the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day under the leadership of Smith. They appointed him as the head of the Stone Church's building committee. Some notable people in the community include Cole Bennett, Harry J. Haiselden, Trey Kerby, Dennis Hastert, William Derring, Arthur E. Andersen, Lewis M. Long, Lewis Steward, and Eduardo Lucero.

The Plano Hotel is situated in the city, and was constructed by John K. Smith; it shows the Italianate architectural style. It was put on the list of the National Register of Historic Places.
