It is located in Ada County, Idaho with a population of more than 10,000 residents. The city is surrounded by the state capital, Boise but is a separate municipal government. In 1841 the first group of immigrants heading to Oregon's Willamette Valley passed through the area on what would be known as the Oregon Trail. Fort Boise, which was built within the area, was set up as a supply station and a landmark to guide other travelers that will use the trail. The area was also filled with fields of grasses and bulrushes. The Idaho state capital lies east of Garden City. The mountains and foothills of the Boise National Forest are located towards the north and they give the city an ever-changing backdrop, with a view of the Bogus Basin Ski Resort located close to Garden city.

Boise and Garden City are so close that only those that are knowledgeable enough will be able to tell the difference. The city has a greenbelt that runs from the eastern part of the city to the west where it meets the Boise city legs.
