The community was established in the 1840s by Stephen Tuttle Thompson. The first name of the community was Thompsons Village. Unfortunately, the name Arab was misspelled by the Postal Service in 1882, The son of the founder Arad Thompson applied for a post office that year, but the service misspelled his name, which was one of the names sent to the Postal Service.

The city was incorporated in 1892. It has a mayor-council, elections are carried out every four years in the city. Brashiers Chapel Cemetery, one of the many cemeteries in the city, is named after Hiram Brashier, who emigrated from South Carolina and decided to settle near the current location of the cemetery. The oldest gravesite in the cemetery dates back to 1866.it is the burial site for the maternal grandmother of Stephen Tuttle Thompson, the first settler in the community. Most of the individuals buried in the cemetery are either linked by blood or marriage, with a deep link to the area's history. The cemetery is added to Alabama Historic Cemetery Register. Mariah C.
