Delivery of Flowers to Melissa
The town is located in Collin County in Texas and has more than five thousand residents. The pioneers of the area came from the old Highland town and C.H. Wysong, a blacksmith, was one of the first pioneers. A post office was constructed in Highland, and the Texas Central and Houston Railroad were established in the community. A depot was also established, and the city was laid out. The construction of the railroad attracted many families into the community, and the city was believed to have been named after the daughter of the railroad executive, George A. Quinlan. George supervised the Texas Central and Houston Railroad, but people opposed the decision of the town. A rumor was that the city was named after Melissa Huntington, daughter of C. P. Huntington, another prominent railroad executive.
They made this opposition because Quinlan, Texas, was named after George Austin Quinlan himself, and Anna, Texas, was named after his daughter, Anna Elizabeth Quinlan. The first school in the city was constructed on land owned by George Fitzhugh, John Gibson, and James Graves, who were early settlers in the town. The school's first teacher was Mary Huckerston, who tutored in the school for more than four years. The school was a two-story brick schoolhouse, and the construction of the railroad supported its development. Corn, wood, alfalfa hay, livestock, and wheat were also sold close to the railroad, and this sale made the city a major shipping point in the county. The tornado that struck the city destroyed many buildings, churches, businesses, and cotton gins. The brick school building was greatly affected, and the post office, bank, and the Texas Central and Houston railway station were not affected by the tornado. The Walden Hotel was thrown up against the school building, and all the buildings that were affected by the tornado were rebuilt.
