It is a town located in Providence County in Rhode Island and was settled as a farming community. It includes the historic villages of Primrose, Branch Village, Forestdale, Union-Village, Slatersville, and Park Square. The town was named after Smithfield, London in England, and it was part of Smithfield in Rhode Island until it was later incorporated as North Smithfield.

The town was first colonized after William Minnan, a Native American and also a praying Indian, and a Quaker colony developed in North Smithfield, which extended into south Uxbridge in Massachusetts.
