Sending Flowers to Oberlin, Ohio

The city is located in Lorain County and has a music conservatory, a liberal arts college, and Oberlin College. The city has an industrial production of aluminum with processes reducing aluminum from its flour salts by electrolysis. This resulted in the birth of the Hall-Heroult process. The Anti-Saloon League was founded in the community by two Presbyterian ministers, Philo P. Stewart and John Jay Shipherd. They rode far to find a suitable location for the community. They prayed and rested in the shade of a tree and agreed that the spot was the perfect one they were looking for. They begged the owner of the land to donate five hundred acres for the school, students were asked to donate to help sustain and build the community, but tuition was free for them. This brought many bright young people who could not afford tuition, and it still remains up to date. Unfortunately, the city was faced with tornados and flooding, which killed a lot of people in the city. The city's largest employer is the Federal Aviation Administration, and this serves the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center taking charge of a small part of Canada and six states. The city's enrollment with a loose group of several dozen students following abolitionist Theodore Weld was called the Lane Rebels. This made the city's status as a non-abolitionist change. The Oberlin Heritage Center is located in the city and is a nonprofit organization ruled by an eighteen-member Board of Trustees. Through annual fund contributions, memberships, grants, investments, planned gifts, and fundraising projects, it gets its funds.

The source of the Oberlin Heritage Center draws its roots from the Oberlin Village Improvement Society and Oberlin Historical Society, which is a group of concerned citizens established to improve and beautify the town, to preserve the Monroe House and the Little Red Schoolhouse.  The heritage center is presently a museum and was one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Partner Places program and National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Apollo Theater is also located in the city and is one of the earliest theaters to be maintained by Oberlin College.

Oberlin College

Oberlin College is a conservatory of music in the city and a private liberal arts college. It became one of the first colleges to admit African Americans and women since it was founded for progressive student activism. Therefore, there is always an agreement between Oberlin College and the high school that students who live in the district and attend Oberlin High School can attend the college for their entire school career.
