Gibsonville, also known as the City of Roses, is located between Alamance and Guilford counties in North Carolina. In 1851 the town did not exist, and only a few buildings that supported some farmers and gold seekers were present in the area. Joseph Gibson's father established a gold mine and farming operations in the area. He was also providing grading services for the North Carolina Railroad Company after the construction of the rail depot. The first train arrived in the town at the depot of Gibson Station in 1855. In 1871, the state issued a charter that officially named the Town of Gibsonville. At the initial creation of the town, gold mining played only a minor role in the town's economy. The Char Consolidated Gold Mine Company started operation in the area by crushing ore at a mine constructed half a mile from the Depot of Gibsonville. The community has a cemetery located in the area, but no graves have yielded any gold.

Some of the first stores in the area were owned by Captain Billy Gilmer, and he focused on supplying miners and farmers; his store was a wooden store located at Piedmont Street and Main Street, which is the current location of Reno's Pizza. A lot of wooden saloons were also constructed during the gold mining days, which made the town a very rough town with limited restrictions. The Depot served as a holding area for agricultural goods and livestock that was being shipped on the railroad, which was the primary economic base of the community, later in 1886, a local entrepreneur mill builder Berry Davidson constructed a steam-powered Minneola textile mill, and he also built Hiawatha textile mill, the combination of the textile mills changed the economic base of the town from an agricultural shipping town to a strong, vibrant industrial town.

Schools in the Community

The city has been known as the City of Roses since 1929 when train passengers could see large acres of rose bushes close to the railroad tracks. Gibsonville Elementary School, Eastern Guilford Middle, and Eastern Guilford High are the community's schools. The schools serve students in the community across all levels.
