The town is located in Johnston County. It has residents of more than two thousand; it is one of the towns established along a Weldon and Wilmington Railroad branch, which was completed through Johnston County in 1886. This town was named for the four oak trees that grew from a stump. The town had various facilities such as a post office, grist mills, sawmills, saloons, churches, and general stores.

The main occupation of the town's residents was tobacco and cotton farming. Like many towns in the area, it developed due to the construction of the Seaboard Line Railroad. It got its name from the railroad, the supply depot for production materials, due to the significant landmark located at the feet of the rail bed. It was a unique oak with four trunks that grew from the base; the oaks attracted suppliers.

A school was constructed in 1923 and was the consolidation of several rural schools and became the world's "largest rural consolidated school". The school was later destroyed by an arsonist. The town had street lights as one of the developments when the population was only a few hundred.
