The city is located in Saratoga County and has more than nine thousand residents. It was named after its main village, also called Waterford, located in Troy's northwestern part and southeastern part of Saratoga County. The village is at the junction of the Hudson River and the Erie Canal and is the oldest incorporated one in the United States before the city was formed. Waterford hosted "Tugboat Roundup" and "Canal Fest" celebrations in the city and was formed from the town of Halfmoon. The city is located in the southeastern corner of Saratoga County and about twelve miles away from Albany at the junction of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. The Hugh White mansion served as the Waterford museum and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
