The community is located in Orleans County in New York and has more than eighteen thousand residents. It is a village in the towns of Ridgeway and Shelby. The village is one of Orleans County's most populous areas and part of the Rochester megalopolis area. Ebenezer Mix surveyed the area and named the village. The neighboring towns of the community include the towns of Shelby and Ridgeway. The village developed after the establishment of the Erie Canal which bends as it passes the village, creating a basin that serves as a stopover point. The community became the center of businesses that served passenger traffic and trade on the boats. The government established mills constructed on Oak Orchard Creek and took advantage of the water power provided. 

The community became a major market of New York City because the fertile lands around it yielded abundant fruits which were exported. Therefore, the area became a thriving industrial community because it is located about an hour's drive from two influential cities, Buffalo and Rochester. The village is about thirty minutes away from two small cities, Lockport and Batavia. The village enjoyed more businesses and trades that concerned passengers and freights on canal boats because the Erie Canal passed through it. Joseph Ellicott, the agent of the Holland Land Company, owned a very large portion of the area. The community was incorporated in 1832 and created an entity with Shelby and Ridgeway that same year. Medina Herald is the village's printing press and newspaper. The National Register of Historic Places lists several places in the community and includes the Payjack Chevrolet Building, United States Post Office, Boxwood Cemetery, Medina Armory, and the Main Street Historic District. A mayor and four trustees oversee the affairs of the village.

The community became a tourist attraction because of its location on the Niagara Wine Trail and its historic downtown. The parks in the village include Rotary Park, Medina Canal Basin, Gwinn Street Park, Gulf Street Park, John E Butts Memorial Park, Pine Street Park, and State Street Park.
