The town is located in Saratoga County. The name was derived from an early settler called Eliphalet Ball, a Presbyterian minister; he relocated to this newfound city, Ballston, from Westchester County in New York. The town is situated in the southern part of the county and is located north of Schenectady. Initially known as "Ball's Town" and "Ballton." and owned by the Mcdonald brothers. It was bought by Rev. Eliphalet Ball from Bedford in New York and he named it Ball's Town, he also paid the Mcdonald brothers with one barrel of rum for the right to name it after himself. Over time, the town's name became Ballston for short. The town also has the following places within the city, such as the Ballston Center, a hamlet in the town; others are Ballston Five Corners, Burnt Hills, etc. Ballston's Lake has an unknown maximum depth. it was formerly known as Long Lake. For some time, the lake's depth was not determined due to various caves that hindered divers from reaching the bottom.
