The City of Haledon was registered as a borough by legislation of the New Jersey House on 8 April 1908. It was based on a general referendum. Dutch farmers were the initial settlers. The Roe, Leonhard and Stansfield families moved to the area before the Civil War and they established the St. Mary Episcopal Church, Leonhard Wax Company and a general store. The area became a streetcar suburb of Paterson after the Civil War. It became incorporated as a city in 1908.
