The city is located in Nodaway County. It has a population of more than 12,000 residents. In addition, the city is the location of Northwest Missouri State University and the Northwest Technical School. The city is the second-largest city within the boundaries of the Platte Purchase of 1836. The city was platted in September 1845.

The name Maryville originated from the town's first postmaster Amos Graham. He was one of the first settlers of the area that would later be called Maryville. In addition to his role as postmaster, he was one of the original Nodaway County Commissioners, and he also served as the county clerk when the town got formally organized. The first house in the city was built by Jack Saunders, who was a large slave owner and the first courthouse was also built-in 1846 prior to the construction on the courthouse. Functions relating to government affairs were held in the home of I.N Prather.

Edmond Jacques and George R Mann designed the existing courthouse. It was built in 1881, and Mann was also the designer of the Arkansas State Capitol. The courthouse that he created is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has the sign of welcome and an iconic pineapple sculpture. The community was first incorporated in 1856. but it was finally and formally incorporated in 1869 when the Council Bluffs and Kansas City, St Joseph Railroad arrived. 

Northwest Missouri State University

The city won a contest in 1905 to have the position of the Fifth District Normal School to become Missouri State University. Later, it occupied eighty-six acres, including the Methodist Seminary. It is located on the northwest corner of the city next to the Wabash train station.
