The body proposed other names such as "River Towne", "Branch," and "Forks," but they were rejected. West Branch Township changed the name of the Springvale area to West Branch.

The State approved the city's incorporation, and this acceptance of the change was based on many factors. The factors the State of Michigan considered were the geographical location of the city, previous growth of the city, the abundance of natural resources, and the strategic location of the railroad.
