The city is located in Berrien County in Michigan and has more than five thousand residents. The community is located in the southern part of Buchanan Township and about five miles away from Niles. The town was named after James Buchanan, a former President of the United States, and was popularly known as "Rebud City." The city was called this name because it had many redbud trees that have historically lined the streets and manhole routes into the town. The company was established by acquiring two other companies in the city, but Clark Equipment Company eventually left the town. This development made the city diversify, and small businesses took over the buildings that Clark donated to the city. The company has its headquarters in the city and became successful. Pears Mill is located in the city and a flour mill using the water power from the flowing McCoy Creek. The company was officially opened when it had its headquarters in the community and still stands. It's open during the summer for vacationers and visitors. 

The Tin Shop Theatre is located in the city and is located close to Pears Mill. The establishment is a small theater with performances that operates in the summer. The theater hosts a variety of shows for any occasion and everyone of any age. Buchanan Art Center serves the city's residents and is located close to the old Police Station.
