Flowers Sent to Residents of Hazard, KY

The town is located in Perry County and also serves as the county seat. It has a population of more than 6,000 residents. The town was laid out in 1824 by landowner Elijah Combs Sr and was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry the victor of the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812.  A post office was built in the village with the name Perry Court House, but it was later changed to Hazard. A state assembly later incorporated the city in 1884.

The town was isolated by the mountains surrounding the town, but it became more accessible to the outside world after the arrival of a railroad which made transportation in and out of the community easier in 1912. A valley was the only major access to the town. the arrival of rail transport brought about prosperity, but the Great Depression also led to its end.

Schools in the Community

The town has a Technical and Community school which is under the Hazards Independent Schools. It is a school district that serves the city. It operates one middle school, one high school, and one elementary school. The community also has Perry County schools which operate six elementary schools, one high school, one K-12 school, and one elementary school. Tom Paxton wrote a song, the High Sheriff of Hazard, which was written about a coal miners' strike that occurred in 1964. During the Black Gold Festival, a lot of cast of a TV series The Dukes of Hazzard visited Hazard some of the cast James Best, Catherine Bach, Rick Hurst,  and Sorrel Booke, other stars to have visited the town include John Schneider and Tom Wopat.
