The city is located in Warren County, and some parts are located in Polk County in the state of Iowa. The city has a population of more than 13,000 residents and is part of the West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Des Moines International Airport is also located close to the community. Some of the first settlers came to the area in 1846. One of such settlers was Samuel Crow, who settled near the North River, and the first construction in the area was a log cabin that Samuel Snyder built. The year after, more families started to settle in the small city known as Pyra, and a post office was subsequently established in June 1856. The city was laid out by George W. Swam who also erected a hotel in the city. Mr. Swan was born in the city of Norwalk, Connecticut, and associated with Norwalk in Ohio. 

The city's first railroad was constructed in 1882. It was a narrow-gauge line that ran from Des Moines to Cainsville. The railroad that ran through the city was later acquired by a subsidiary of Burlington Railroad, which later widened it to a standard gauge. The primary use of the railway was for the movement of farmers' livestock to various markets located in different areas. The rail line was subsequently abandoned in 1947 after a major flood damaged the North River bridge. The city was later incorporated in 1900, and Adam Stiffler served as its first mayor. At that time, the city was just one square mile in size. Phone service was first introduced in the city in 1903. A lot of additions and land acquisitions were some of the factors that contributed to the city's growth.

The local public schools in the community are part of the Norwalk Community School District. The city has five schools: Oviatt Elementary, Eastview, Lakewood Elementary, Orchard Hills Elementary, and Norwalk High School.
