Plants and Flowers to Pomona Park, FL

The town of Pomona Park is located in Putnam County in Florida and is one of the Palatka micropolitan statistical areas. The town was platted more than twenty-five years after a group of settlers moved into the community. After the Civil War, this town had more than nine hundred residents. The first settlers were the Union soldiers who served in the community during the war when the settlement consisted of about seventy-five families. The town was known for its grape vineyards, citrus, longleaf yellow pine, and farm produce.

Citrus Groves

The year-round warm temperatures and fertile soil produced plenty of fruit-bearing groves. The city was named after the Roman Goddess of fruit trees, usually depicted as holding a pruning knife and fruit, Produce Farm & Groves is the largest commercial citrus grove in the town limits, and they provide fresh fruit to public school students in three counties. The grove also markets and grows persimmons, vegetables, and peaches, and the community's original seal depicted a mature fruit-bearing tree.

W.S. Middleton commissioned the old packing house on the northern part of the town for processing citrus fruits for shipping. Clyde D. Middleton was one of the managers in the development of frozen orange juice concentrate. The city's name was officially changed when the "Park" was added because of the mail addressed to Pomona in Florida The town has a Mayor/Council form of government and is the first Florida town to have a woman elected as Mayor. Eula E. Dunn was duly sworn and elected into the office of Mayor. Lake Broward is a beautiful and large lake in the town and has fissures that supply water from the aquifer. Sometimes the lake water is much cooler than other surrounding lakes due to the depth of the lake. The lake is a clear, acidic, oligotrophic lake of low mineral content because it receives surface/subsurface inflow through well-drained soils and the majority of its water from direct rainfall.

The town has a Head Start School, three Churches, a Post Office, a Community Center, and four public parks.
