The Nevada City stagecoach was robbed by the Reelfoot Williams Gang and lost over seven thousand dollars, being the first stagecoach robbery in the city. It was renamed when Schuyler Colfax visited the town and inspected the progress of the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad. The construction was carried out on the western portion of the first transcontinental railroad, and the city became the southern terminus of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. The city operates Amtrak, the national passenger rail system which is located at 99 Railroad Street in the heart of town.
